Summary

FreeText is a freeform rich text database application. Each record is a complete rich text document. A record can contain anything that can be inserted into a rich textbox. This includes: formatted text and graphics. The records are unstructured. There is no requirement that fields for each record be defined and be the same from record to record. A database can be searched in four modes from novice to expert.

Benefits

  • It's free. You don't pay a cent.

  • It's freeform. You need no structure. Just type, or just copy and paste from somewhere else.

  • It's freewheeling. Throw anything into a heap, and easily find it again.

  • It's freeing. FreeText has a low learning threshold. If you can use the Windows Save As dialog, you can create a database. If you can type a sentence, you can create a record. FreeText's four search modes from novice to expert let you start immediately and lead you from one level to another. FreeText lets you search in the mode that suits you. FreeText is distributed with a sample database and a Quick Start tutorial in the Help file that lets you learn to search immediately without having to create a database.

Features

FreeText provides functions to:

Database:  create, open, close, import records, reindex and compact. restore from backup, and copy databases.

Record:  save, update, delete, undelete, and print records, and save individual records out of the database to separate files.

Search:  search full text in four search modes from novice to expert.

Browse:  browse existing records. When no search is in effect, you can navigate all records in a database using First, Previous, Next, Last, and By Number.

Navigate:  navigate hit records returned by a search using First, Previous, Next, Last, By Number.

Session History:  recall search statements that previously returned hits during the current session and use them again.

Saved Searches:  save search statements that returned hits so they can be recalled and used again beyond the current session.

Expand Term:  expand the stem of a word to show terms existing in the index around the stem. This is a search aid that lets a user peek into the index of a database. It can be helpful when, for example, there are alternative spellings or misspellings of terms.

Editor:  A record can contain anything that can be inserted into a rich textbox. This includes formatted text and graphics. FreeText provides a moderately powerful editor of rich text to create and edit records. Data can be pasted from other sources into the editor's rich textbox.
